What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting and submission holds. It was first developed in 1925 by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., O’Brien, and Hélio Gracie. Carlos Gracie later brought Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to America. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves by using leverage and weight distribution to beat a heavier, stronger opponent. By taking an opponent to the ground, the weaker person can then employ several techniques to gain the dominant position allowing them to finish with a joint lock, chokehold, or other submission to defeat the stronger opponent.
